Tucker agrees.
Are you aware of a significant sea change?
In a very recent post I mentioned twice that Trump’s move on Venezuela, especially his talk of “running” Venezuela, have invited actors around the world to launch their own cross-border adventures.
This morning I watched Tucker Carlson treat this idea in great detail. I recommend the Rumble post.
I want to be clear on certain things from my post on the subject. First, I have no personal indigestion over scumbags like Maduro having their comeuppance. And I have heard the “fulfilling the arrest warrant” argument and have no problem with that.
But you can’t get around what will likely be the unintended consequences.
Some may ask why I see the Maduro raid as such a precedent. After all, you may ask, didn’t we do this before?
The answer is yes. The attack on Panama to arrest Pineapple Face is the most glaring. But thinking in terms of reality, not morality, in that world we were still the guardian of the sea lanes. The post-war order was still very much alive. We have an understanding with the world. We will keep the sea lanes open. You will be free to trade with ANYONE, so long as you don’t cross swords with the USA. Indeed, for 70 years the US Navy had ONE primary mission: to keep the sea lanes open for EVERYONE.
That world no longer exists. Starting with the late Clinton years, we have gradually backed away from this responsibility. I remember how shocled I was to learn we occasionally left the Mediterranean without a carrier group in it.
Now, with many powers noting the vacuum left by less US power projection (individual adventures not withstanding), you can expect they will feel far less constrained then they would have 30 years ago.
