This popped in my feed today. It’s from Mary (who I love to pieces).
I would like to hear from those who agree of the release of all of those Jan 6th convicted criminals recently released with dismissal of their charges and your elected president so far! I am disgustingly curious !
This is the pure tribalism that has corrupted the thinking of almost everyone on social media. Perhaps I could have left it…but you know me. Despite the last phrase, intended as an insult to discourage an actual response, I decided to rise to the challenge. At the risk of disgusting my buddy, I submit the following.
First, context
The events people call an insurrection on J6, amounted to a mini riot. Hundreds of people, in a crowd of at least 250k, got into a physical altercation with police at the barricades at the Capitol Building. Cops were injured. Protesters (including non-violent protesters) were injured. One unarmed and laughing protester was shot and killed.1
But in a case like this, you cannot avoid comparison to other events. This does not excuse a single participant in the mini riot on that day. But it does establish the disparity in treatment of those people and rioters who have gone before them. It also makes obvious the tribal nature of the coverage, investigation and prosecution of all involved.
Contrast this to the years preceding the mini riot. 1000 injured. Billions in damage. 35 (?) killed. And we’re not talking about broken windows and name plates knocked off of walls. We’ re talking about federal building and police stations burning, along with businesses, cars and dumpsters.
A portion of a city was taken over for months. Talk about a real live insurrection!2
People who just happen to share tribal membership with Mary many in positions of responsibility, one who became vice president, were praising the rioters and bailing the rioters out. There was no consideration at all about who injured anyone or damaged someone’s livelihood.
It was laughable how all the criminal behavior over the previous months and years was attributed to people caring at all about Michael Brown or George Floyd. If you believe a single dumpster burned because the perps gave a rat’s ass about those two, I have swamp land to sell ya.
The “criminals”
First, I challenge anyone to find me, in the last in the last 30 years, where someone hit a cop, threw something at a cop, or had a tug-o-war with a barricade with the cops and got YEARS in jail. Let me save you the time, you likely won’t unless the guy was already on probation for a seriously violent crime.
Second, not all the charges were dropped. In the case of violent offenders, sentences were commuted. But they still have criminal records. Pardons were issued to non-violent protestors. The vast majority had been charged with things like trespass and [gasp] parading. The real, non-violent baddies were accused of vandalism.
Again, name me one person who did time for any of that. Some people were arrested for standing in one spot taking video of what was happening. That was ALL they did. No one disputes that, not even the DA’s.
If I had been there, I would have been among the latter because, of course I’d be recording, riot or no riot, for my podcast. Who the hell wouldn’t? And so would you have been, if you did ANYTHING media related on a regular basis. Say other, and you are a LIAR.
And the big compare/contrast - the precedent set only days before
Let me preface this by saying it was not done (in reality) by Joe Biden. He did nothing of his own volition since before the 2020 election. This was put under his hand by handlers. Joe doesn’t remember signing a ban on LNG exports for Chrissake!
BUT, under his signature, a man had his sentence commuted, after already being commuted from death to life in prison. This particular dirt bag fired bullets into heads of two wounded FBI agents. He’s a cop killer. He had already gotten more of a break than he deserved and now this? He walks?
Clearly, it was decided by a handler that this would be popular among traditionally indigenous people. Smooth politics.
I believe the same FB thread mentions Virginia cop killers as well.
He also pardoned people suspected of destroying 3000 hours of video, some of it exculpatory for many of those charged for J6 offenses. He pardoned people who are suspected (and we have the video record on this) of coaching people to lie about events that day. They are the same people who destroyed the video records.
So say what you wish. Be as disgusted as it pleases you to be about commutations and pardons. But don’t kid yourself about occupying any moral high ground. You don’t. And NONE of the Trump pardons devolve to helping Trump, as you can see by your own reaction. But Biden’s pardons? Many put a fire wall between him and culpability in lots of dirty dealings.
Suggestion
In order to appear more thoughtful, take a look at what you repost or blurt out on social media and ask yourself, is this meme sensible? Am I raising the bar or am I being a tribal drone by posting this? Just considering those two questions will result in higher quality output.
By any standard, the Babbitt shooting was a bad shoot by a panicked cop. It should have been fully investigated. It was not. In fact, the cop involved has had two promotions and received all kind of bonuses and benefits he does not deserve.
Insurrections don’t ONLY address federal entities. State and municipal entities are REAL governments too. Although you wouldn’t know that considering the utter lack of reaction by most Americans to the riots pre-J6.
